Our Heritage of Excellence

about3Local 393’s heritage of excellence is the product of our commitment towards achievement. We have long invested into our Apprenticeship instruction and have further enhanced our demand for excellence via our Journey-level training. In 1961, Local 393 opened the Pipe Trades Training Center.

The original training center had but one classroom and a welding shop. Today, the Pipe Trades Training Center is one housed in a state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot facility located at 780 Commercial Street in San Jose. The Training Center has 48 classrooms and offers more Journey-level classes than any other center in America. Affiliated with a Foothill Community College, the Training Center offers a fully accredited program.

More than 57 instructors bring first-rate credentials and extensive field experience to the classroom. Most are United Association members currently working in the field. Others are from the chemical, electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering industry.

Each instructor shares a commitment to teaching and learning based on individual student needs. Instructors attend special courses provided by the UA Instructor Training Program to stay current with changes in the industry. In addition, our instructors create many of their own teaching materials, giving students up-to-the-minute, state-of-the-art information on codes, materials, and processes not found in traditional textbooks.
