Developer KT Urban Hires Non-Union Labor, Workers Say
As new high-rises crowd the downtown San Jose skyline and construction activity booms, dozens of city union workers say they’re being left behind because developers are hiring out-of-town non-union employees.
“We are in the midst of a building boom in San Jose,” said Al Gonzalez, Jr., 61, a spokesman for UA Local Union 393, which represents plumbers, steamfitters and refrigeration fitters. “I am standing here tonight asking for fair paying jobs, so that profits of this boom benefit the whole San Jose community, rather than just developers at the top of the heap.”
More than 40 workers from four building trades took aim at developer KT Urban at a recent public meeting.
