Business Manager’s Column
Honored to Represent You
Brothers and Sisters,
Thank you for electing me to represent you as your Business Manager. I am honored by this responsibility, and I will do everything I can to support you and our Local.
I have been a member of UA Local Union 393 for over 20 years. During that time, I have worked for several contractors in varying capacities. I have been an Apprentice, a Journeyman, a Foreman, a General Foreman, a Detailer, an Estimator and a Project Manager. I have installed cast iron in ditches, orbital welded high purity piping in clean rooms, detailed central utility plants and ran both small and large projects. I taught at the Local 393 Pipe Trades Training Center; was a member of UA Local 393 JATC; was elected as a Business Agent of UA Local 393; and served as the Interim Business Manager of UA Local 393.
Growing up the son of a UA Local 393 plumber, I gained appreciation of the many benefits union labor entitles its members and their families. I saw how a good union wage enabled my father to support a wife and five children. I saw how my father took pride in being a union member, and I saw the quality of work produced by union labor. My father’s pride has been passed on to me.
We are in a period of time when work is plentiful. The hall has taken in several hundred travel cards to fill the needs of our local contractors. This was a much needed change after going through a recession. However, now is not the time to be content with our good fortune. Rather, we should push harder to secure as much work as possible. This can only be accomplished through the hard work and perseverance of our members.
As the Business Manager of UA Local 393, I vow to continuously push to gain union work and union wages. I will continue the important work of our “Campaign for a Secure Future”, which includes expanding our political and community engagement programs; investing in member leadership development; and strategic organizing to win public policies that support working families. I will continue supporting our MEPS coalition and I will lead efforts to win a San Jose Local Hire Initiative. As our commercial market share grows, I will work to continue that growth and expand our residential plumbing market share.
I am honored by the faith you have shown in me by electing me as your Business Manager. I know that promoting unionized labor is the best path to elevating the condition of working class people. I will promote union labor in any and every way I can.
In Solidarity,
Steve Flores
