Erica Valentine (Paul) joins Local 393’s staff as political director. In addition to bringing boundless energy and a deep commitment to our members, she has many years in the construction industry; has taught at our training center; and has a law degree, a masters in business administration, and a masters in public affairs. Erica is also certified in mediation, as well as trained in negotiations from both the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Law School.
“It’s an honor to be part of this union,” said Erica. “Over the years, I have worked with 393’s general contractors, signatory contractors, as a union hall consultant, and as instructor at the Pipe Trades Training Center teaching project management and other classes. 393 members are the most loyal members to the trade and to each other. It’s one big family, and folks look out for each other. A few years ago, I was in a nearly fatal accident, and members’ families brought food, cleaned my house, and cared for me. I am forever grateful for our members’ support during the most difficult time in my life.
“I’m the oldest of five kids, and I started working in second grade raking leaves, cleaning houses, and washing cars to buy food, school supplies, and clothes for my siblings. I was in foster care until my grandmother took me in. She always showed me how important it is to accept everyone for who they are, give people as many chances as they show up for, forgive and forget, lift others up and don’t tear them down, and always respect yourself.
“I first got involved in construction as a temp in a general contractor’s office. Construction was this whole new world. I was intrigued, so I went into the field as an asst. project manager, a project engineer, an estimator, and eventually a project manager.
“My upbringing and my broad experience allow me to understand many viewpoints, effectively communicate with all stakeholders, and build a level of trust between groups. I will continue to take that approach in my relationships with 393’s members, contractors, elected leaders, and community members.
“I think the biggest opportunities for our members are, How do we recruit new members? How can we increase our market share? and How can we increase our impact in the political climate?
“Members ask me where my endless energy comes from. To put it simply, I love what I do. There is no other place I would rather be. I am grateful the tremendous efforts of the membership and those who have come before me that have made 393 a leader in the political world.
“I’m excited to work on 393’s political, communications, and market share strategies. My vision for the future is to increase member involvement and elevate our Local’s goals. I hope to learn and grow together. My personal mission statement is: today is today, and always do our very best, be kind, be honest, and be human.
It’s an honor and a privilege to serve you and be a part of this union. I’m proud to be among the brothers and sisters of 393. I look forward to the future of building more of Silicon Valley together!”
